Carlos Alcaraz is still not the best Carlos Alcaraz but he is still winning. The Spaniard is already in the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 after beating German Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-1 in two sets. His next opponent will be Frenchman Arthur Fils, who defeated Andrey Rublev in the round of 16.
Solid first set of the Spaniard, at least much more than in his debut against Cerúndolo. This time the counterbreak made by his opponent did not make him fall down and, without saying that he was playing an effective tennis, at least enough to overcome with some ease a very inferior opponent. He broke again on a couple of occasions and closed the first set with solvency by 6-3.
Thus, despite only 50% of points won with the first serve and having given up 7 break points. Despite having won fewer points from the baseline than his opponent, Carlitos ended up winning the set after taking advantage of 3 of the 5 break points he had. He took advantage of the German's horrible serve (42% of first serves) to win the set.
Altmaier started the second set with desire and had three break points to get ahead, but did not take advantage of them. He started the second set up adding himself to the scoreboard.
With 2-1 on the scoreboard Alcaraz returned to press on the service of his rival and took an advantage that he did not abandon until the end of the match. As we said, his opponent had not put him in great difficulties until that moment, playing without too much risk. He was 4-1 up in the second set with everything in his favor to close the match.
And so he did, he got the couple more games he needed to close by 6-1. Now, a tougher test in the semis against a Fils that, if he is well, should not be a problem for the world number 3 on clay.
