Djokovic labels Monte-Carlo loss to Evans as "worst match" in recent years

Great Britain's Dan Evans pulled off the biggest win of his career on Thursday at the Monte-Carlo Masters, upsetting World No.1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

The World No.33 played the match of his life to stun the top seed 6-4 7-5, ending Djokovic's perfect 10-0 record this season. The top seed didn't help matters, committing over 40 unforced errors in a performance that he'd like to forget. However, he had high praise for his British opponent after the match.

"He deserved to win," Djokovic said in his post-match interview. "He was a better player. Just more focused I guess and played with a better quality in the decisive moments. This has been probably one of the worst matches and performances from my side I can recall in the recent years."

Following the Serbian's easy opening round win over Jannik Sinner on Wednesday, very few people believed Evans would pose a threat to the former Roland Garros champion. The British No.1 had a career 4-14 record on clay, implying that was his least favorite surface. However, Evans relied on his backhand slice and consistency to stun the reigning Australian Open champion.

"Yesterday, I played a pretty good match I thought," Djokovic added. "Today, was completely the opposite of what I felt yesterday. It was obviously very, very windy, tough to play in these kind of conditions against a guy like Evans who makes you move. He's very unpredictable with his shots. He dismantled my game."
