Hubert Hurkacz has a maiden ATP title on clay as he saw off
Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-4 to win the ninth and potentially final edition for now of the
Estoril Open in Portugal.
Hurkacz completed the feat as he often does with an ace banging down his 15th of the day. He leads alongside Elena Rybakina on the respective tours this season. It is an eighth career title in 10 finals and a first on clay.
He now has at least a title on clay, grass, hard and indoor hard. The full collection for the Polish ace who ended the superb story of the Spaniard who took out Casper Ruud yesterday. Given the prowess of his compatriot, Iga Swiatek on the surface, he has finally achieved his first success on clay.
He has also won a title every year since 2021 with only 2020 being a barren season. He has also won more than one every year barring 2022 which means more can likely be expected even on this surface now his set is complete.
His win over Martinez was over in just under an hour and a half. He pivotally broke at 3-1 with Martinez having chances to hold and this was vital. He did not have a break point back thundering down his ripping serve to great effect and sealed the set on first set point on his serve 6-3.
In set two, there was a break straight away as despite initially spurning two break points, his third proved to be the ticket as he sealed the title from there. He could've been even more rampant spurning one break chance at 4-2 up, but eased through his final service game for the title.
