Former world number one
Bjorn Borg believes Spain’s young
tennis sensation
Carlos Alcaraz wants to achieve what legendary
Rafael Nadal
did in his career. The 21-year-old is already regarded as one of the best
players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, along with
the likes of Italy’s Jannik Sinner.
On the other hand, Nadal is considered one of the greatest
players in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era,
having lifted 22 Grand Slam titles in his illustrious career. The 38-year-old
is also known as the ‘King of Clay’ after winning the French Open 14 times,
which is a record in the competition’s history.
Former world number one Borg has been recently quoted in a report
by TNT where he stated that in his opinion, Alcaraz wants to achieve what Nadal
did in his career. The 68-year-old, who remained world number one for more than
100 weeks in his career and also lifted more than 60 titles in the singles category,
believes that the young Spaniard, who is currently taking part in the Barcelona
Open and has already cemented his place in the quarterfinal of the competition
after beating Serbia’s Laslo Djere in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4,
has the right mentality to go and on lift many titles in the future.
"Alcaraz, I think he wants to achieve what Rafa did and
he is an unbelievable player," said Borg. "He's still very young, and
I think, I hope, he's going to win more Grand Slams. And I think he will win
more Grand Slams. He has the right mentality, he can play on any kind of
surface. He has been number one, he's top. But I hope at least this year, he
wins at least one Grand Slam. I'm going to watch him because I like the guy.
Hopefully, maybe, he's going to be the king of tennis."
