Tennis fans
commented on the possible retirement of
Nick Kyrgios from the ATP tour before
turning 33 years old.
The
Australian player recently participated in the
Ultimate Tennis Showdown,
although not on the court. Kyrgios was confirmed as one of the eight athletes
who would compete in the exhibition event organized by coach Patrick
Mouratoglou, but he is not yet 100% physically fit.
The former
Wimbledon finalist served as a coach for his friend
Frances Tiafoe during the
Los Angeles tournament. In a conversation with him and
Jeremy Chardy, Kyrgios
commented that he will not continue playing on the ATP tour at the age of 33
due to the exhausting nature of the life as a tennis player.
“Bro the
sport’s crazy. The schedule is out of control. Just old bro I’m getting old.
I’m 28 yeah. But like all the drinking and partying I’m like 57. That’s Foe’s
fault bro, I don’t have those genetics.”
“No f*cking
chance. No way. Bro, there’s no chance I’m playing until 33."
Many fans
expressed their discontent with Kyrgios' decision.
"I like
Kyrgios but why all this fame for someone who has not achieved anything
special? He is talented but in term of results and career it's barely average."
“There’s
about 1000 players out there who’d love to have his average. He pushed himself
once and ended up in the Wimbledon final. Has beaten every top player including
the big three. His average isn’t like anyone’s.”
Other fans
supported Kyrgios:
"People
criticizing him wouldn't be able to achieve a fraction of what he has, let the
man live his best life.”
“Sounds
good Nick! You are a delight to watch when you are at your best, but it’s
cringy when you are at your worst. Either way, it’s been a hell of a ride. Hope
you can make a good comeback and compete for titles over the next few seasons
before you retire.”
After
several months away from the ATP tour due to injuries, Kyrgios made his
comeback at the Stuttgart Open with a loss to Wu Yibing in his only match of
the year so far. His return is anticipated in two weeks at the Masters 1000
Canadian Open.
