World number three
Stefanos Tsitsipas has stated that he is aiming
to develop tennis in Greece and has called his fellow star
Maria Sakkari for
help.
The 25-year-old expressed those remarks after being quoted recently
in a report where he expressed frustration over the lack of support from the
tennis federation in Greece regarding the development of the sport.
"Personally, I have a plan, which I want to implement
in a few years from now,” he said. “I don't expect anything from the
federation, they won't be responsible for it, it's a personal matter and
something I want to create in the next few years.
"Of course, in this project, Maria is also welcome...
For me it is a passion and it has nothing to do with money. I am passionate
about the development of tennis in Greece and I hope in the future I will find
the time because it is something that has been on my mind for the last few
months.”
Tsitsipas had a mixed time on the court in 2023 where he started
brightly but ended with some poor results. The Athens-born had to retire because
of a back injury from the last major tournament in the ATP calendar — the Finals
in Turin.
