America’s Taylor Fritz and Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz are out of the Munich Open because of fitness concerns. The ATP 250 event will be held on April 14, and some of the top players in the world will participate to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize.
This year’s competition will be without two high-profile players: Fritz and Hurkacz. The biggest name who will miss this year’s competition will be the 2024 US Open runner-up. The development will be a severe blow for Fritz as he finished the last edition of the competition as the runner-up. The San Diego-born star most recently withdrew from the Monte-Carlo Masters as well because of an injury. At the time of announcing his withdrawals from the competition, Fritz stated that he was hopeful of returning to the court soon.
“I was super-excited to come back to the UTS Tour after I made the final in Los Angeles in 2023,” said Fritz. “Unfortunately, I aggravated an abdominal injury during my semi-final match in Miami, and I will not be able to recover in time to compete in Bastide Médical UTS Nîmes this week. I was really looking forward to play in this iconic venue and can’t wait to be back on UTS soon!”.
After Fritz’s withdrawal, the second most high-profile player in the competition will be his fellow countryman Ben Shelton. The highest-seeded player in the tournament will be the reigning world number two, Germany’s Alexander Zverev. The 27-year-old has lifted the competition twice in his career, in 2017 and 2018. On the other hand, Hurkacz, who also missed the Monte-Carlo Masters because of a lower back injury, is set to miss another event. In their place, the Miami Open champion, Jakub Mensik and Belgium’s David Goffin did not enter the main draw. Last year, the tournament was won surprisingly by Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, who came out on top in the final against Fritz in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 6-3.
