John Isner believes he underperformed at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals, expressing his disappointment after Team USA was bundled out of the tournament.
The former World No.8 lost both of his singles matches at the multi-nation event, and although he wasn't expected to defeat World No.10 Jannik Sinner, Isner lost to the Italian in a 6-2 6-0 drubbing. His subsequent match saw him shocked by Daniel Elahi Galan Riveros, as he fell to the Colombian in three sets.
"I wish I could have helped my team out more, and I didn't,” lamented Isner after Team USA's exit. “It's pretty disappointing. “You know, you feel like you sort of let the guys down. I mean, I know they don't feel that way, but it's hard for me not to feel that way. That's really the beauty of these competitions.
"It's the beauty of it, and it's the beast of it too. You can be the person that doesn't contribute. That was me”.
Although compatriot Frances Tiafoe won the opening rubber of the tie against Colombia, Isner's loss ensured the Americans would exit the tournament as they required a 3-0 sweep to advance to the next stage.
