After scoring the biggest win of his career when he defeated former World No.1 Novak Djokovic to lift the Miami Open title two weeks ago, Jakub Mensik was brought down to earth as he lost his opening round match at the ongoing BMW Munich Open.

The Czech star pulled off one of the upsets of the season when he defeated Djokovic to win his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title in Miami in March. As an unseeded entrant in Miami, Mensik defeated the likes of Jack Draper, Arthur Fils and Taylor Fritz before outplaying Djokovic in the final to lift the title.

Mensik receives reality check in Munich

The 19-year old was playing in his first tournament since winning the title in Miami. Now seeded sixth, Mensik faced German Yannick Hanfmann in the opening round, with the local player granted a wildcard entry to his home event.

Coming into Munich, Hanfmann had only won two tour-level matches in 2025. The World No.131 prevailed in an emotional 7-6(4) 4-6 6-3 victory, scoring his first tour-level win since February when he lost in the second round in Santiago.

This is not the first time Hanfmann has caused a huge upset on the clay. On his Italian Open debut in 2023, he stunned Taylor Fritz and Andrey Rublev en route to his first Masters 1000 quarter-final. Conversely, Mensik will have to return to the drawing board, and his next chance to compete will be at the Madrid Open at the end of the month.
