Nicolás
Jarry defeated
Casper Ruud in a three-set battle at the 2023
Geneva Open.
The top
seed, Casper Ruud, made his debut in the round of 16 against American player
J.J. Wolf and achieved a great victory of 6-3, 7-6 against a tough opponent.
The Norwegian arrived in good form, having reached the semifinals of the Rome
Open and being defeated by Holger Rune.
Chilean
player Nicolás Jarry reached the quarterfinals after defeating Dusan Lajovic in
the first round (6-4, 6-2) and then advanced by walkover as the sixth seed,
Tallon Griekspoor, withdrew from the tournament to prepare well for the
upcoming French Open.
The first
set was closely contested, with Jarry holding his service games more
comfortably than the former world No. 2. However, Ruud capitalized on his
opportunities in the eighth game to break Jarry's serve and take the first set
6-3.
The second
set was even tighter, with both players holding their serves without much
trouble. In fact, neither player managed to earn more than one point when
receiving their opponent's serve. In the tie-break, the former world No. 38 did
not give Ruud any chances with his serve and took the match to a third set.
Jarry took
the lead in the third set and was serving at 4-3, but Ruud broke back to
prolong the match. However, it wasn't enough as Jarry broke once again and took
the decisive set 7-5.
