Korda takes an early 'down under' break, skips Brisbane

America’s Sebastian Korda’s mysterious withdrawal from the Brisbane International has raised concerns about his participation in the Australian Open 2025. The first Grand Slam of the year will begin on January 12, where players from all over the world will participate to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize at the highest level.

One player whose participation in the first Grand Slam of the next year remains highly doubtful is America’s Korda. That is because the 24-year-old has mysteriously withdrawn from the ongoing Brisbane International, which started two days back.

It is not clear why the world number 22 decided not to take part in the Brisbane International. Korda had a rather below-par outing in the Australian Open in 2024, where he was knocked out after losing in the third round to Russia’s Andrey Rublev in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 7-6, 6-4. His best run in a Grand Slam in Melbourne came in 2023, and his journey ended in the quarterfinals after losing to Karen Khachanov of Russia. He was forced to retire during the match when the score was 7-6, 6-3, 3-0.

That was Korda’s best run in any Grand Slam. The Florida-born star had a good season in 2024, where he played 49 matches across all competitions, winning 30 and losing just 19. His best performance in 2024 came in the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, where he lifted the title after beating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in the final with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
