Diego Schwartzman made his Argentina Open debut today in what is his final tournament as a professional, defeating 7th seed Nicolas Jarry in a three-set battle, 7-6[12-10], 4-6, 6-3. In a South American tennis classic between the Argentine and the Chilean, the former world No. 8 delighted the local crowd by overcoming a tough opponent.

Jarry’s favoritism wasn’t enough to stop Schwartzman, who showed glimpses of the clay-court prowess that made him one of the best players on the surface in recent years. The 'Peque' extends his career for at least one more match.

This was likely the biggest surprise of the day in the tennis world, as Schwartzman arrived at the tournament with little match rhythm. In the second half of 2024, he only played the qualifying rounds of Roland Garros and Wimbledon, along with a first-round exit at the US Open. Just a week ago, the 32-year-old played in the Rosario Challenger, losing in the first round.

Jarry once again displayed the inconsistency that has marked his career since his fantastic run to the Rome Open final less than a year ago. The Chilean seemed to be in strong form for 2025 after pushing Jannik Sinner to the limit at the Australian Open, but his South American swing has started on the wrong foot.

Schwartzman rolls back the years to stun Jarry

The first set was a true battle, with the crowd turning the match into a spectacle for Schwartzman, Argentina’s tennis leader in the years following Juan Martin del Potro’s golden era. Both players had opportunities, but Schwartzman showed greater composure on serve.

The set was decided in a dramatic tiebreak, where Jarry went up by two minibreaks (3-0) but failed to capitalize. The Chilean squandered three set points, while Schwartzman clinched the set on his third opportunity with an epic 12-10 after one hour and 22 minutes.

The second set remained tight, with both players holding serve until Jarry secured a crucial break in the ninth game to take the set. It seemed like the Chilean was regaining control, but Schwartzman broke early in the third, surging ahead 4-2. Backed by the passionate crowd, he sealed a 7-6[12-10], 3-6, 6-3 victory, extending his farewell run by at least one more match. In the second round, he will face Spain’s Pedro Martinez.
