Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will retire from tennis at the French Open this year and today he played his final match at the Monte-Carlos Masters as well.
The fan favourite got a chance to say goodbye to fans in the Principality with a solid effort which ultimately was not good enough to defeat Cilic. The Croatian was firmly in control from start to finish and there was never any doubt over his victory. Tsonga gave it his all but as he noted in his retirement announcement he's simply not good enough to compete the way he wants to.
It was apparent from the start as the Croatian jumped out to a 4-0 start. Tsonga played okay but Cilic was simply better. The Croatian also struggled with his serve hitting it less than 40 % of the time but even so Tsonga was not able to take advantage of it. Every time the rally developed it was the Croatian who was in control.
He finished off the set 6-2 and the 2nd set started. Tsonga had to fight off break point the first two service games he played and he was able to. For a moment it looked like he found his rhythm but Cilic quickly took control of the match once more. He broke Tsonga once for the 4-2 lead and once more for the 6-2 finish. A good battle but ultimately a 2-6 2-6 loss for Tsonga in his final match in the Principality.
