Jannik Sinner is through to the second round at the 2024 China Open. But to say he had it easy is perhaps not the truth as he had to stage a comeback to win through 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the end against Nicolas Jarry.
Sinner had a superb stint in Asia last year winning the China Open and following that up with a successful Shanghai Masters. It also technically birthed the Sinner we all know now. He was sick in a bin during his match in Beijing and from there on ironically became one of the best players on the planet.
Sinner though compared to last year where he had a point to prove has just won the US Open so he very much is rusty and can be got at. Something that Nicolas Jarry would've been hoping to do and succeeded with early doors.
Jarry's massive serve and forehand not only caused Sinner problems but also broke down in the end. Jarry dictated the rallies and hit 11 winners in the opening set. Seven more than Sinner and won the opener 6-4.
Jarry broke early in the tie and he was able to keep that break thanks to aggressive play which yielded 13 unforced errors. But it flipped as Sinner broke first in the second making it 3-0. He battled Jarry from the baseline and upped the tempo as he looked to turn the momentum onto his racquet. He had no issues winning the second 6-3.
It was even more streaky in the third as Sinner's pressure told and he broke before heading towards a 6-1 set. Job done but he didn't half have to toil.
Next up is Stan Wawrinka or Roman Safiullin. A tough second round if he isn't on his game but he showed in glimmers that it is solely about unlocking the game and being consistent.
