Injuries once again troubled
Matteo Berrettini, who was forced to retire during his match against
Jack Draper at the Madrid Open Masters 1000. The Italian had taken the early lead but had to withdraw after the first set due to injury.
Berrettini chose to start on the return, a smart decision that earned him a break and an early lead within minutes of play. He quickly consolidated the break on serve, while Draper began showing his usual consistency behind his own serve.
However, Berrettini ran into trouble in the sixth game, where Draper broke back after winning three games in a row to go up 4-3. Both players held serve from there to reach the tie-break, with Berrettini narrowly saving four break points along the way. In the tie-break, the Brit immediately took control with two early mini-breaks and wrapped up the set 7–6(2).
At that moment, Berrettini walked to the net to signal his retirement due to injury and left the court with a concerned expression, suggesting the issue could be serious. It remains to be seen whether he’ll be fit in time for the Italian Open, which begins next week.
