Daniil Medvedev finally picked up his first win at the Nitto ATP Finals, as he defeated Alexander Zverev for the second time in eight days.
Both men recently clashed in the Paris Masters final, with Medvedev emerging victorious. The results remained the same this time, as Medvedev overcame his German opponent in straight sets to grab a 1-0 record in Group Tokyo 1970.
"Confidence is the key, for sure. Winning an ATP Masters 1000 always helps for the confidence,” Medvedev said post-match. “I knew that I can play good. It was a little bit shaky from both of us in the beginning from one point of view, but from the other point of view, I think there were some unbelievable points. To be honest, the intensity of the match was one of the most intense I had in my career."
Having gone winless after making his debut at last year's event, the Russian joins Novak Djokovic atop the group with his 1-0 record. He is trying to become the fourth man to win the season-ending event after going winless in his debut (Djokovic, Stitch, Edberg).
"When you play a Top 10 opponent in the first match of the tournament, you have to be there all the time," Medvedev said. "That is what I managed to do, actually. I just lost one service game in the first game of the match. Finally, when you win it, you can say, ‘Okay, that was just the start.’ I am happy about my performance.”
