America’s
Reilly Opelka has criticised the arrangements made
for the
Madrid Open. The ATP 1000 event is set from April 23 where players from
all over the world will participate to showcase their talent and secure the
ultimate prize.
Opelka, who is set to feature in the competition, shared a
post on his social media account where he criticised the arrangements made for the
players. "Madrid sunset views are the best 😍,” he wrote in a
sarcastic manner.
Opelka has been in the news as he was one of the players who
were part of the lawsuit filed against different governing bodies on a
number of charges. According to a recent
report published by ESPN, the PTPA and 22 players filed complaints against the
ATP, WTA, International Tennis Federation (ITF), and International Tennis
Integrity Agency (ITIA) on Tuesday on charges of anticompetitive business practices,
monopolising professional tennis, and systemic abuse.
Amongst the list of players who filed the complaint are Opelka, along with the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up, Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, current world number 76 Corentin Moutet, and 2014 Wimbledon doubles champion Vasek Pospisil.
According to the report, the players and the PTPA accused
the WTA, ATP, ITF, and ITIA of working together as a ‘cartel’ to reduce
competition and fix prize money. The report further stated that the suits have
been filed in the United Kingdom (UK), European Union, and United States
district courts.
This year in Madrid Open, Russia’s Andrey Rublev will defend
his title in the competition. He lifted the title after beating Canada’s Felix
Auger-Aliassime with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
