Naomi Osaka was the main ranking mover in the WTA during 2024 with Emma Raducanu, Amanda Anisimova also among the top names. The ATP list paints more of a picture of rising stars coming up through the sport.
In particular Jacob Fearnley leads the way with the 23-year-old famously taking a set off Novak Djokovic in one of his more sterner Wimbledon examinations in his road to the final. The Scot is seen by some in the sport as the next cab off the rank so to speak now Andy Murray has left the sport.
Given his 2024 numbers, it's quite easy to see why. He moved up 547 spots incredibly and now sits just inside the top 100. Still work to do, but with that leap alone watch out for Fearnley this next year.
The others are mainly known quantities on the rise. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, the big serving Frenchman made a real impression winning Basel and also played superbly at Wimbledon. It has been a golden era again of French talents with both Mpetshi Perricard and Arthur Fils joining the ranks of Ugo Humbert and veteran Adrian Mannarino. While Richard Gasquet closes the door on his career, the next superstars are lying in wait. He moved up from 205th to 31st in the world this year and was top 30 for a time. Juncheng Shang also moved up to the top 50 after being ranked just inside the world's top 200 at the turn of the year.
The same can be said for Jakub Mensik who lost to Khachanov in the Qatar final and made a Masters Quarter-Final and reached the top 50. He went from 167 to 48. While Yunchaokete Bu also moved from 171 to 65th in the ATP Rankings.
WTA like alluded to is more about faded lights trying to shine again while ATP is about new lights finding their way onto the ceiling to outshine those who perhaps will fade. These five show that there is a route in 2025 for them to reach the top.
547 - Jacob Fearnley currently ranked 99 has gained 547 places (ranked 646 at the start of the year) in the ATP rankings during 2024 and is the biggest ranking mover during this season. Upward. @atptour @ATPMediaInfo pic.twitter.com/aTIxJycDUs
