After skipping 13 months due to a severe knee injury, the 20-time Roger Federer returned to action in Doha last week, winning one match and wasting a match point against Nikoloz Basilashvili.
Needing more time on the practice court, Roger decided to skip this week's ATP 500 event in Dubai, taking one step at a time and still preparing his spring schedule. The Swiss targets Wimbledon as the point where he wants to play at 100%, seeking the ninth All England Club crown after that memorable performance against Novak Djokovic when he wasted two match points.
The Marseille tournament director Jean-Francois Caujolle believes that Roger is still capable of winning his beloved Wimbledon despite his age and such an extended break.
Caujolle has no doubts about Roger's motivation and desire to challenge the rivals from the top again, saying that he had a chance to go deep in Doha had he converted that match point against Basilashvili in the quarters.
"Federer should be among the Wimbledon contenders; he is just amazing. Roger is as excited as when he was 17; he can win on grass if he is fit. I also thought he could have beaten Nikoloz Basilashvili in Doha and gone far. He is so good for tennis," Marseille tournament director Jean-Francois Caujolle said.
