It was a spectacular match that ultimately saw
Andrey Rublev emerge as the victor against
Rafael Nadal.
The Russian secured a spot in the
Monte-Carlo Masters semifinal after a three-set victory over Rafael Nadal. It was a very shaky start for Nadal who was struggling on his 2nd serve as well as committing many errors. Rublev used that opportunity to clinch the opening set 6-2. The start of the 2nd set did not bring any better play from Nadal.
He was still making a lot of mistakes while Rublev was able to find winners with his big forehand. He took the 2-0 lead which he maintained till 4-3. Then Nadal finally found a breakthrough pulling the break back before going on a run to close out the 2nd set 6-4.
It seemed like Nadal would be able to find a way to come back into the match and win it but Rublev found a completely new gear in the final set blowing Nadal away from the baseline. The Russian was better from the baseline all day long and made far fewer errors than Nadal whose backhand oftentimes did not hold up.
In the end, it proved enough for the huge upset victory for Rublev who won the final set 6-2 earning a spot in the Monte-Carlo Masters semifinal. It is a great win for Rublev who will play in his first Monte-Carlo semifinal against Casper Ruud.
