Andrey Rublev was swift in his victory over Lorenzo Sonego whom he defeated in the Erste Bank Open Vienna 2020 final to win the trophy.
It has been that kind of year for Rublev who has added yet another trophy this season with a victory over Lorenzo Sonego in the Erste Bank Open final. The Italian has had a fairy tale week but he could not complete it with a victory over Rublev. The Russian took just over an hour to win 6-4 6-4. The first set started with the Italian serving superbly winning points quickly and with ease. Rublev responded in a similar fashion and we were off to a hot start. In the fifth game of the match, trouble arose for Sonego as Rublev came out strong and dominated the rallies. The Italians didn't have his serve to bail him out and Rublev took the 3-2 lead. The match returned to script after that with both winning service games quickly.
At 5-4 Rublev served for the set but Sonego came out focused and fought his way to two consecutive break points. Sadly for him, it was the last points he would win in the opening set with Rublev stringing together several good serves and rallies to close out the set 6-4. The 2nd set opened with Rublev attacking Sonego but the Italian withstanding it. The same script applied for the majority of the set with Rublev close to breaking Sonego but never actually achieving it. Late in the set, Rublev finally managed to break through taking a 5-4 lead before closing out the match 6-4.
