In a not-so-shocking development,
Stan Wawrinka saw himself beaten in Marseille by rising French talent Arthur Fils who has been playing really well this year 6-2 6-3.
Fils had some notable wins last year indoors and he played well at the Paris Masters as well. It continued this year as he posted some very impressive performances indoors as well. Playing at home is always a boost for him and proved it once more here as he'll contest the semi-final after a win over Wawrinka.
It was really a match where he controlled all things from the start. The serve is a solid weapon and it worked. The forehand can be spectacular and it did enough. The youngster was also all over the court with a lot of energy, a bit too much for the veteran Wawrinka at this time. It was not a perfect match from Fils as he faced three break points but he saved all of them.
He had plenty of chances on Wawrinka's serve, 12 break points in total and he used four of those to secure the lead he needed to win the match. He'll play in his maiden ATP semi-final tomorrow. A top 100 debut is on the horizon as well.
