3-times Grand Slam champion
Andy Murray reached 1,000 ATP
Tour-level matches after defeating
Alexei Popyrin in the Queen’s Club
Championships. The local hero joins an elite group of only four other active
players who have reached this milestone.
Murray secured a win for the first time since the Miami Open
in March this year, after missing much of the clay swing and suffering three
consecutive first-round defeats. This time, the Australian Popyrin was the
victim, with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Murray tops Popyrin in his 1000th Tour-level match
The 5-time Queen’s Club champion won again at the tournament
he has conquered the most. As Murray’s retirement approaches, he continues to
make history and perform at a high level. At 37 years old, Murray became the
5th active player to reach 1,000 matches on the Tour.
The player with the most matches currently is
Novak Djokovic
with 1,324, followed by
Rafael Nadal with 1,300, both far ahead of their
pursuers.
Fernando Verdasco reached 1,000 matches at the end of 2022, and
Richard Gasquet has so far played 1,004 matches, reaching this milestone in
April this year at the Madrid Open.
In his 1,000 matches, Murray has recorded 739 wins and 261
losses, along with 46 titles, including three Grand Slams, 14 Masters 1000, an
ATP Finals, and two Olympic gold medals, among other trophies. The former world
No. 1 is the 19th player to break the 1,000 match mark.
Murray is currently behind Verdasco and Gasquet in terms of
matches played but still far from the top-10, which is closed by Stan Smith
with 1,082 matches. The Brit is also the 14th player with the most professional
wins (739), still distant from the next on the list,
Pete Sampras (762).
