The
Japan Open continues to roll on, and while home favorite
Kei Nishikori was unable to continue his winning streak in his return to action from the US Open, the Japanese dropped a gem of a point in Sunday's loss to Holger Rune.
Nishikori has had a series of physical problems during the last few seasons that have interrupted what had been an excellent career for the Japanese. First his shoulder, then his knee, the injuries caused his comeback to be postponed until the current 2024 season;
At the Japan Open, Nishikori had a renaissance and was seen with much more confidence and recovering his characteristic movements on the court, one of the high points of his game.
Against Rune he had everything to win but finally the Dane prevailed in a tight 3-set battle, although it was Nishikori himself who took the most spectacular point of the day, beating his opponent with a surgical lob on the backhand side as the books say.
