Italian tennis superstar Jannik Sinner is nearing the end of his three month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, and retired American star Andy Roddick gave his thoughts on Sinner's mindset and form as he prepares to return to tennis.

The World No.1 kicked off his season with a successful defense of his Australian Open title, before serving a three-month suspension after he tested positive for Clostebol at last year's Indian Wells event. Sinner's suspension began in February, with the Italian on pace to return at his home Masters event in Rome next month.

Roddick doesn't see the silver lining to being suspended

In the latest episode of his Served with Andy Roddick podcast, the former World No.1 engaged in a Q&A session. One of the more interesting questions was asked by a fan, who pondered if Sinner would benefit from the suspension as the Italian had not missed a Major and would be fresh whilst his colleagues took damage during the grueling first quarter of the season.

"I don't know that you're ever a winner when you get suspended for three months," began Roddick. "How I would counter that is to say do you think Jannik would say it's ideal to not be playing tennis?
"We're going to overreact to whatever the result is when Jannik Sinner comes back. We're gonna say 'that really hurt him' if he loses in the quarters of Rome. If he somehow wins Rome, we're going to say 'see, it was great for him'. No, he's just the best player in the world, so any result is on the table."
