Fernando Verdasco put out a statement two days ago criticizing the
Madrid Open for a lack of Spanish players getting a wild card entry into the event.
Fans were quick to jump on the criticism bandwagon yet most seemed to focus on
Andy Murray who was one of those that got one. The British player did not intend to play clay-court tennis this season but he opted to do so after changing his mind. After fans criticized Murray, Verdasco felt compelled to come out in support of the Brit writing:
"Andy Murray Of course you should not turn it down. In my opinion, no doubt you are the one on the list that most deserves getting a wildcard in Madrid. Good luck at the tournament. PS. I would have been more than happy to have the chance to play qualifying too!”
It was a response to Murray explaining to fans that he was more than willing to play qualifying at the event noting that he will most likely do so in Rome one week after Madrid. He also said that he did not ask for it but was rather given it asking whether he should have turned it down.
