Brandon Nakashima was aggressive in his first match at the Next Gen ATP Finals on Tuesday, overpowering Juan Manuel Cerundolo to move to 1-0 in Group A.
The American secured a 4-1 3-4(3) 4-1 4-0 victory over Cerundolo at the 21-and-under event, impressing the crowd with his power and shot selection.
“It was super fun out here,” Nakashima said after the match. “The atmosphere was electric right from the beginning. It is an amazing feeling playing in front of these fans. I am really happy with how I played in front of all these fans.
"It was important to stay there mentally. A lot of crucial points out there with the no-Ad and then in the second set he kind of picked up his level and I had to battle."
The 20-year old has been in great form over the past month, winning 10 of his last 11 matches during which he captured his second ATP Challenger Tour title of the season. The World No.63 credited his newfound aggression to his ability to stay focused, with the results being evident in his recent performance.
“It is different from the practice court now to the matches,” Nakashima added. “Also with the crucial points. It is tough sometimes, but you have to stay focused as much as possible and take every opportunity out there. I just tried to stick to my game plan and hopefully I will be able to continue.”
