Alexander
Zverev easily defeated
Denis Shapovalov at the
Halle Open with a score of 6-2,
6-4, advancing to the quarterfinals.
The German
has already shown good form during the clay season. He reached the semifinals
of the 2023 French Open, matching his result from last year, and lost to Casper
Ruud. Despite not having excellent results, his recent losses before Roland
Garros were against top players, such as Medvedev in the Madrid Open, Alcaraz
in the Rome Open, and an in-form Jarry in the Geneva Open (who also ended up
winning the tournament).
At Queen's
Club, Zverev is proving that he can also perform well on grass and has already
secured a victory against Dominic Thiem in a tough match, as well as against
Denis Shapovalov in the second round.
In the first
set against 'Shapo', it took the German only 32 minutes to achieve a 6-2 score,
breaking in the first game of the match and putting pressure on almost every
service game of the Canadian. Zverev hit 5 aces, had a 66% first serve
percentage, winning 81% of those points. He also won 64% of points on
Shapovalov's second serve.
In the
second set, Shapovalov showed slight improvement, but once again it was not
enough to counter Zverev, who broke in the third game and maintained the
advantage with his service for the rest of the set, winning it 6-4. Zverev
demonstrated solidity on his serve and did not face any break points against
him.
His next
opponent will be Nicolas Jarry, who secured a great victory over Greek player
Stefanos Tsitsipas. Their head-to-head record is currently tied at 2-2, with
all matches being played on clay. Their most recent encounter was in the
semifinals of the Geneva Open less than a month ago, where the Chilean defeated
Zverev in two sets.
