The American Jenson Brooksby caused a surprise in the second round of Indian Wells on Saturday. The world No. 937 reminded everyone of his best moments from a couple of years ago and dispatched world No. 81 Felix Auger-Aliassime.
It wasn’t the only good news for the locals, as they saw their favorite Taylor Fritz, current world No. 4 and 2022 champion, easily defeat Italian Matteo Gigante.
Brooksby is on his way to returning to the top after beating world No. 18 Felix Auger-Aliassime, one of the players who started the year with great form, having won two titles and holding a 16-5 record before the tournament. However, the American showed his best tennis to defeat him decisively, 6-4, 6-2.
The former world No. 33 had a 59% first serve, compared to the Canadian’s 58%. However, the differences were in the effectiveness, especially with Brooksby’s near-unbeatable first serve at 79%, while Auger-Aliassime’s was a bit lower at 67%.
The American held onto his serve and saved the only two break points against him, while he capitalized on 3 out of 6 break point opportunities that Auger-Aliassime offered.
At 24, Brooksby is still at a good age to return to his best level. Just a couple of years ago, he was considered one of the biggest talents on the Tour with great potential. However, he received an ITIA sanction for missing three drug tests, leading to an 18-month suspension, which was reduced to 12 months after his appeal.

With no major problems, world No. 4 Taylor Fritz began his Indian Wells campaign with a win over Matteo Gigante (No. 217) by 6-3, 7-5. The 2024 US Open finalist had an impeccable serving day (92%) and overwhelmed the Italian, who came through qualifying.
The first set was evenly matched for only a short time until Fritz broke in the 6th game. From there, he dominated, especially showing his class in key moments. The American No. 1 took advantage of the Italian’s struggles with his first serve, which was only at 47%.
With this win, Fritz starts his journey in Indian Wells on the right foot and remains the top favorite among Americans. In the third round, he will face Alejandro Tabilo (30th seed), who recently earned his first win of the season against Dusan Lajovic. Fritz leads their head-to-head 3-0, having defeated Tabilo twice in 2024, including in the second round of Indian Wells.
