Felix Auger-Aliassime picked up one of his biggest wins by ranking since November 2022 as he saw off Taylor Fritz to throw the tie between USA and Canada into deciding doubles at the United Cup.

Canada were anchored by Leylah Fernandez in particular to victory in their opener against Croatia. But after the former US Open finalist fell to Coco Gauff in a pretty rampant opener for the WTA Finals champion, it was up to Auger-Aliassime and he delivered winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

It now goes to deciding doubles with Auger-Aliassime sealing a huge top five win. He came back from 4-6, 3-5 for a special houdini esque act of escapology.

One that he couldn't secure against Borna Coric yesterday when he was 6-0, 4-2, 30-15 up and lost. It was the reverse today as he came from behind to seal the win. Fritz also starts the year with a loss for the first time since 2019.

It now will be an all singles led doubles tie and so all will be on the line in a 50/50 matchup albeit it will perhaps favor Team USA. They will of course have Coco Gauff leading the line who is a proficient doubles player in her own right with her team with Jessica Pegula up to recently being one of the best on tour.

But they will face off against Leylah Fernandez and Felix Auger-Aliassime with Fritz aiming to bring them back on course with Gauff. USA are top seeds this week and will face Croatia on Tuesday on New Years Eve in the final tie of their campaign so the pressure is on now to head into the position to join Canada potentially out of the group if they lose.

For now though Auger-Aliassime can revel in a pretty superb win to open his campaign today. Can he do double duty both figuratively and literally?
