Cruz Hewitt has claimed the biggest win of his young career thus far in terms of ranking as he saw off Yu Hsiou Hsu to reach the semi-finals of an Australian Pro Tour event in Launceston.
Hewitt is currently ranked 1,174 in the world and defeated a player in Hsu that is ranked 224 currently. It is a first ITF semi-final at the M25 in Launceston. He was down 4-5 (15-30) on return in set one and saved five break points during set two.
But he held firm to seal the win as he continues to progress and grow. Hewitt was in the spotlight a lot during the Australian Open.
He was given a wildcard for qualifying for instance and this was criticised mainly as his father is Lleyton Hewitt. But it brought a heavy contingent of fans to his matches around the grounds showing it was a good choice.
But he also landed himself unintentionally in hot water after training with Jannik Sinner. Fellow Aussie Nick Kyrgios who has continually taken Sinner to task over his failed drugs test wasn't best pleased albeit rowed back on his statements.
But he also got the chance to train with Carlos Alcaraz. Whether helped by his father's incredible career or not, Hewitt is grinding now at a lower level and is excelling this week in particular.
"Hey everyone, just won my quarter-final match, through to the semi-finals," he said on an Instagram video.
"Super proud with another win. Thanks to everyone who came out to support, and hopefully you can come out tomorrow."
He won his previous two matches from a set down against Australian opposition including Dane Sweeney in the Last 16.
