Indian Wells calls itself Tennis Paradise but that wasn't exactly the case on Thursday with matches suspended and then cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.
Two men's and three women's matches were rained off and it was announced just before the end of the day that they would be phased into Friday's schedule. A statement released by the tournament confirming the news.
"Play has been suspended for the night due to rain. All matches still on court will be moved to Friday's Order of Play."
Action was initially stopped for around 15 minutes at 8:20pm and then again at 8:45pm. This forced players back into the locker room. Quentin Halys was one set up and seemingly easing towards victory against Pablo Carreno Busta in the second. He will hope that his curtailed match doesn't spell a comeback on Friday.
While Mariano Navone led highly lauded teenager Learner Tien 7-5, 2-3. While elsewhere Julia Grabher was a set up against Iva Jovic on Stadium 3. Lauren Davis v Elina Avanesyan and Anna Kalinskaya v Alycia Parks were both in the early stages respectively.
The organisers have now released an updated Order of Play for Friday with the five halted matches scheduled to take place after the opening 11am matches on the first five courts. Sunshine in California is expected on Friday and conditions are expected to heat up over the weekend.
It is a busy day though with Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas to begin their tournament on Friday. Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula, Mirra Andreeva, Madison Keys, Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka are set to begin over the weekend.
Not exactly what Indian Wells would've wanted but given it is only a few matches, it is better than what it could've been had it been widespread over the whole night.
