The schedule for Day Four at the Indian Wells Open has been confirmed and will take place on Saturday, March 8, featuring the debut of the remaining stars who have not yet stepped on the court, including Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Taylor Fritz, and Madison Keys.
This will be the second day of the second round, following some upsets in the top half of the ATP and bottom half of the WTA. The match between Joao Fonseca and Jack Draper, as well as Amanda Anisimova against Belinda Bencic, are some of the matchups to watch this Saturday.
Center Court
The return of Madison Keys will mark the start of the day at Stadium One, in her first tournament since the Australian Open. The world No. 5 has a streak of 12 consecutive wins and, if she can overcome the long break and maintain the level from Melbourne, she is a serious title contender.
Next up will be Carlos Alcaraz, who will begin his defense of the 2023 and 2024 titles with a debut against Frenchman Quentin Halys. The Spaniard is now the top seed following the elimination of first seed Alexander Zverev. The conditions at Tennis Paradise have slightly changed this year with a surface change, and it will be interesting to see if the 4-time Grand Slam champion can adapt quickly.
Following him will be none other than 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, who has not had the best start to the year. A semifinal injury at the Australian Open was followed by a first-round loss at the Qatar Open to Matteo Berrettini. Despite the injury seeming more serious, Nole returned in just a few weeks. He will look to find his rhythm in his debut match against Botic Van de Zandschulp.
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will take to the court after Djokovic’s match, facing local McCartney Kessler. The Belarusian is in a delicate moment with 1 win and 2 losses during her Middle Eastern swing. Kessler reached the final of the ATX Open just a week ago (losing to Jessica Pegula) and started with a strong win over Anna Blinkova.
Stadium 2
Taylor Fritz will face qualifier Matteo Gigante and is the clear favorite to start strong. As the world No. 5 and American No. 1, as well as the 2022 champion, Fritz is the top local hope. However, the 27-year-old has not had great results to start the year, with a poor 4-2 record.
World No. 3 Coco Gauff will follow in the second match on the second court. The American No. 1 and third seed will face Moyuka Uchijima, a Japanese player on the rise who recently eliminated 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu. This will be a tricky debut, especially considering Gauff is coming off three consecutive losses.
Amanda Anisimova and Belinda Bencic will face off in another notable match on Stadium 2. The Swiss player was the recent champion of the WTA 500 Abu Dhabi Open and has shown great form after her one-year maternity break. Especially motivated this year, Bencic holds a 13-4 record for the season. She will face a renowned rival in Anisimova, who recently won her first WTA 1000 title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
Other notable matchups of the day include Jack Draper against teen sensation Joao Fonseca, Ben Shelton facing surprise Argentine Mariano Navone, Alycia Parks vs. Diana Shnaider, and Emma Navarro against Sorana Cirstea.
