Sofia Kenin won through to her first clay court final since 2020 defeating Amanda Anisimova who had to retire with injury at the Charleston Open and the former sees positives either way in the final.
Kenin will face Jessica Pegula on Sunday night and said that either way an American will win the title. Albeit she did call herself for overexaggerating too after saying about the conditions before being reminded they will also affect Jessica Pegula.
"Well, one American is going to win the title, so that's great! I think it's great for American tennis, for the crown, and for everyone," said Kenin post match as per Tennis Channel on their desk.
"I'm excited for the match tomorrow! She played well obviously so, I've got nothing to lose. I'm gonna come out swinging and if you can make the conditions a little bit easier, it would be nice to have a fair shot tomorrow."
"I usually tend to overexaggerate and say it only affects me." She also said 12/10 feistiness is needed for their final.
She also had some great words for Amanda Anisimova who had another great week but it was a bridge too far. The latter has suffered with a blister on her hand since beating Mirra Andreeva in Miami and seemed to run out of steam against Kenin in the end.
“I told her I hope she feels better and recovers well because it’s a long clay swing and she’s been playing some great tennis throughout the year. I wish her the best of luck and I really hope she feels better.”
But for Kenin, it is a great resurgence after spending a long time in the doldrums after the highest of highs in winning the Australian Open. It hasn't been easy for the American but she will take great solace from this week either way.
12/10 feistiness needed 😅
