Madison Keys survived Liudmila Samsonova’s retirement to advance to the Adelaide International final. The Russian maintained strong service effectiveness but began to crumble late in the second set before retiring in the third with Keys leading 5-7, 7-5, 3-0.
Samsonova dominated the early stages, securing an initial break for a 3-0 lead as Keys struggled to find her footing. World No. 26 Samsonova was nearly flawless on serve, dropping just four of the first 20 points in her service games.
Gradually, the American found her rhythm, improving her serve effectiveness. Although Samsonova led 5-2, Keys fought back, saving four set points and breaking her opponent to level the set at 5-5. The Russian remained composed and finally secured the set 7-5 after a tightly contested service game from the former US Open finalist.
During the break, Samsonova requested a medical time-out due to discomfort in her left foot caused by her sock rubbing against her heel, leading to a bandage change.
Keys appeared more assertive in the second set, delivering multiple aces and comfortably holding her service games. The match was marked by short points with minimal rallies as both players sought quick exchanges.
Despite missing a break opportunity in the fifth game, Keys kept the set even until 4-5, when Samsonova began to experience physical discomfort. From there, Keys took control, winning three consecutive games to close the set 7-5.
In the third set, Samsonova struggled, landing just 50% of her first serves and winning only 43% of those points. Keys capitalized with effective returns, securing two consecutive breaks before Samsonova retired.
Keys now awaits the winner between Jessica Pegula (No. 7) and Yulia Putintseva (No. 25), who will compete in the night session. This marks the American's first hardcourt final in three years.
