Donna Vekic opened up her
Madrid Open campaign by seeing off Hailey Baptiste but for those following the WTA socials, it wouldn't have been a known fact as Sascha Bajin hit out at the organisation for their publicising or lack of for top stars.
Vekic kicked off her European clay court swing by losing out to Jana Fett, however she suffered a shock straight sets defeat to her compatriot and was left in tears. She headed to Madrid seeded 19th and received a bye through to face Hailey Baptiste.
She had no trouble winning through 6-4, 6-3. But Bajin who joined her team at the turn of the year questioned why the WTA had failed to publicise it. "Hey @WTA why no post again about Donna’s match? It’s been a few times now that there isn’t even a post about her winning. Just curious. Also other matches that finished and didn’t get any mention at all."
It comes after the WTA was also under hot water for their use of AI seemingly to doctor images of Alexandra Eala and Iga Swiatek seemingly. This was pointed out by journalist Ben Rothenberg. Bajin clarified that it was more of an issue to do with wanting other players to get coverage outside the echo chamber of the big names.
But in the comments, another point was given with Dalma Galfi winning a WTA 125k was not even posted about. But Bajin agreed while also admitting that it is perhaps a grey area as not knowing what jurisdiction it falls under. "Winning a 125 is not an easy task. Only thing there is it could be a ITF event instead of WTA but still. I get your point and totally agree."
But amid recent issues surrounding the social media and also the AI incident, it is now coaches who have got annoyed at the lack of coverage for their players in a sport which wants to grow itself.
