In a field that featured Iga Swiatek and Liudmila Samsonova for instance, it was an unexpected final and winner at the Bad Homburg Open in the last winner before Wimbledon as Katerina Siniakova won on Saturday evening.
Siniakova who is the doubles no.1 took a leaf out of her partner, Barbora Krejcikova by transferring her form onto a singles court in a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Lucia Bronzetti.
It was also only a third tournament since recovering from a wrist injury that ruled her out for most of the clay court season.
She entered the week ranked No.52 and had not won since Indian Wells but since snapping that streak gained confidence.
Confidence which propelled her past Elisabetta Cocciretto before seeing off the aforementioned Samsonova 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 in the Quarter-Finals.
Facing another Italian in the final, she maintained control from the start and after losing only one set all week, she looked to continue in that vein and served for the win at 6-2, 5-3.
Disaster nearly struck as she struck two double faults and unforced errors to let Bronzetti back in who forced a tiebreak.
After Bronzetti saved three match points, she finally claimed it behind albeit 16 winners and 27 unforced errors. Onto Wimbledon for Siniakova.
