Emma
Navarro opined that
Coco Gauff shot herself in the foot during
their
Wimbledon match. The world No. 17 surprised her compatriot, the second
seed, with a 6-4, 6-3 victory, marking the best win of her career and advancing
to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
The
23-year-old continues her impeccable run at SW19 and has guaranteed her rise to
world No. 14, her highest ranking starting Monday, with potential to climb even
higher. Her next challenge will be against the seventh seed and recent French
Open runner-up,
Jasmine Paolini.
Navarro’s historic win over Gauff
Navarro’s
performance was not entirely unexpected for a player who has steadily climbed
the rankings over the past year. She is top-10 in the WTA Race, won a title earlier
this year, and boasts a 40-15 record in 2024. Against Gauff, she remained
composed and unfazed by her opponent's favoritism.
During the
second set, Gauff began losing control and grew visibly frustrated with her
box. Navarro, leading 6-4, 4-1, sensed that Gauff's outburst would help her
seal the victory. "Yeah, it's definitely a little bit of a confidence
boost, just knowing that your game plan is doing what you wanted it to
do," Navarro said. "I don't normally give the other side of the court
too much energy. I keep it on my side of the court."
"Yeah,
I guess seeing her kind of frustrated and looking at her box, putting her arms
up in the air, it's definitely a little bit of a confidence boost,” Navarro
added. "I guess it maybe gave me a little bit of momentum and just some
energy that I needed."

Navarro
will take the court on Tuesday to face her first Grand Slam quarterfinal
against Jasmine Paolini, who recently reached the final at Roland Garros:
"It will be me versus her. Obviously, it will be in the quarterfinals of a
Grand Slam. It's going to be my tennis versus hers. Hopefully, it will speak
for itself," she explained.
Navarro
also praised her opponent's strong year as she prepares to challenge Paolini:
"Yeah, she's been on this stage before not too long ago. I don't know if
that will work to her advantage. I'll be ready to play. I'll be really excited
to play."
Currently, Navarro leads the head-to-head 3-0, with all previous
matches played on hard courts, including a three-set victory this year in the
third round of the Miami Open.
