Leylah Fernandez downed
Amanda Anisimova 6-3 4-6 6-3 while Martina Trevisan battled past Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6(10) 7-5 to book quarterfinals at
Roland Garros.
Martina Trevisan and Sasnovich were the first ones on the court and the Italian continued her spectacular play on clay. She's now in the quarterfinal of a grand slam by taking down a very tricky Belarussian player. Even when she was down a break in the 2nd set, Trevisan did not give up and continued playing a solid blend of defensive and attacking play which got her the result in the end.
The other match was way more competitive and featured bigger names. Fernandez and Anisimova played a fabulous match that saw the young Canadian advance after three sets. The first was was pretty close but Fernandez was the more aggressive one and it worked out in her favour 6-3. The 2nd set featured much better play by Anisimova.
She opted for an aggressive approach and Leylah did not know how to handle it at first 1-4. Anisimova slowed down a little bit and Fernandez was able to break back at the perfect time when Anisimova was serving for the set. Still, a bit of careless play gave Anisimova a chance and she took it 6-4. The American blasted 18 winners in that 2nd set.
The final set was another close one but Fernandez was superb. She raised her level at the perfect time taking an early break and never letting it go. Anisimova played well but she committed a couple of mistakes in crucial rallies and it cost her. Fernandez was simply too good today.
