Gauff, Azarenka among WTA stars to pay tribute to Puig following the Olympic gold medalist's retirement

Monica Puig announced her retirement from the world of professional tennis this week, and several of her fellow WTA stars were quick to pen emotional tributes to the 2016 Olympic gold medalist.

American tennis sensation Coco Gauff was one of several to heap praise on the Puerto Rican, saying "Definitely going to miss having you on tour but excited to see this next chapter!! Congratulations on an amazing career and thank you for being so kind always.”

Spanish star Paula Badosa chimed in with some kind words, as she congratulated Puig on a great career. "Much encouragement Monica! Great career, you have to be proud,” wrote the 2021 Indian Wells champion. Compatriot Garbine Muguruza also had some nice things to say, writing "The best is yet to come. Good luck Monica!”

Two-time Grand Slam finalist Victoria Azarenka addressed Puig's time on tour, reminiscing on the times they had played against each other.

"All the best Monica!!! You have always been a great competitor to play against and a great person to practice with! Good luck in everything you do next,” wrote the Belarusian.

Puig announced her retirement this week, citing her numerous injuries over the past few years as the reason behind her decision to hang up her racket.

"It’s not a goodbye, but a see you soon," she said. "Over the past 28 years of my life, tennis has been my constant. It has given me some of the most thrilling and memorable experiences I could have ever asked for. But, sometimes, good things come to an end. Today, I announce my retirement from tennis. After a tough 3 year fight with injuries and 4 surgeries, my body had enough.”

While the 2016 Olympics gold medal remains her biggest achievement, her best showing at a Grand Slam tournament was a fourth-round appearance at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships.
