Gauff 'frustrated' and 'disappointed' after Kenin loss: "I tried my best but it wasn't enough"

World number six Coco Gauff has revealed that she is ‘frustrated’ after suffering a first-round exit from Wimbledon 2023.

The 19-year-old suffered a rather surprising defeat against fellow countrywoman Sofia Kenin in the first round with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 on Monday.

Talking with the press after the match, Gauff expressed frustration with the result and admitted that her efforts ‘wasn’t enough’.

"Right now I'm very frustrated and disappointed,” she said. “So, yeah, I think it makes me want to work even harder. I feel like I have been working hard, but clearly it's not enough. I have to go back to the drawing board and see where I need to improve and how to do the right drills to do that.

“I mean, I knew it was going to be a tough first round for me. I tried my best, but it wasn't enough. I think I have a lot to work on if I want to improve from this.”

Despite the result, Gauff stated confidence in her own serve but regretted making ‘too many errors’, which ended up costing her the match.

“Definitely taking care of my service games,” she said. “I do think I'm a better server than her, but I think she took care more of the plus-ones and plus-twos a lot better than I did. Obviously my forehand. I mean, being more aggressive on those shots. I think I made too many errors on my forehand and backhand today,"

The result will be a big blow for Gauff, who despite playing for nearly four full seasons, has not been able to lift her maiden Grand Slam title in the women’s singles category.

Her record is extremely average when it comes to Wimbledon where her best outing was in 2021 where she was knocked out after suffering a defeat in the fourth round against Germany’s Angelique Kerber with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
