World number one
Aryna Sabalenka has opened up about how she
managed to recover during the off-season. The 26-year-old is already regarded
as one of the best players in the world along with the likes of Poland’s Iga
Swiatek and America’s Coco Gauff.
Sabalenka has been recently quoted in a report in which she
talked about how she managed to recover after a tiring season. The Minsk-born
star stated that despite taking some time off, she would be ready to spend another
month off the court for more rest.
“I had some time off,” she said. “I went back to Florida,
slept in my bed which was amazing. I was really tired from the hotels every
week. Had some time off but honestly after such an intense season I felt like I
could rest for another month. My team was calling me trying to reach out, to
make sure I got to the plane on time. Actually I was late for the first plane.
For real. I thought I was flying out tonight but it was actually in the
morning. I was like ‘Ok guys I think we need another ticket’. It was quite a
funny moment . I was like ‘Ok, whatever. An extra day off. Thank you.”
Sabalenka had a fabulous season and finished as the
world number one. It was the first time she finished a year as the best player
in women’s tennis in the singles category. It was also the first season where
Sabalenka lifted two Grand Slams. She first won the Australian Open after
beating China’s Zheng Qinwen in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3,
6-2. The reigning world number one then lifted the US Open after beating
America’s Jessica Pegula in the final in straight sets with a score of 7-5,
7-5.
