The second round of the Qatar Open continued the trend of upsets. In the final match of the day, world No. 10 Paula Badosa was defeated in straight sets by world No. 41 Amanda Anisimova, 6-4, 6-3. It was a tough blow for the Spanish star, who is still trying to regain the level she showed at the Australian Open.
Badosa had survived a difficult first-round match against Mexico’s No. 1, Renata Zarazúa, who replaced Katerina Siniakova at the last minute. The match ended in a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory for the Spaniard.
Her next opponent was Amanda Anisimova, who had already eliminated former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the opening round. The American seems to have overcome the physical issues that hampered her at the start of 2024.
Their only previous meeting came at the beginning of last season at the Australian Open, where Anisimova also emerged victorious. At that time, Badosa was struggling with back problems.
Badosa started the match stronger but failed to capitalize on her early chances. The Spaniard missed two break opportunities, which proved costly. By the fourth game, Anisimova found her rhythm and broke Badosa’s serve. Although Badosa fought back to level at 4-4, Anisimova handled the pressure well, held her serve, and then broke again to take the set 6-4.
The second set remained highly competitive. The tension peaked in the fourth game when Badosa served and reached nine deuce points before Anisimova finally broke on her seventh opportunity. The American was rock-solid on serve, putting all the pressure on Badosa. At 5-3, Anisimova secured another break to close out the match 6-4, 6-3.
Anisimova now moves on to an all-North American third-round clash against former US Open champion Leylah Fernandez.
