Angelique Kerber hasn't played in a long time and her return to the US Open has been good so far as she's showing a good level against good competition.
Angelique Kerber won her 2nd round match against Friedsam in a closely contested affair and speaking after the match the German was happy about the result but even more so with the performance. She said:
"It gives me a little bit of confidence that I’m getting my match rhythm back, my mental path is there on court, and I can focus on playing points. It’s not so easy, because we had such a long break, but you need a little bit of time to find your way again."
After the match she was also asked about her next opponent and while she didn't speak much about it she reiterated her commitment to think about herself and her own game rather than focus on the opponent. She said:
"For me, it’s really important to go on court and play the tennis that I’m playing in practice, that I know I can play and focusing on my matches. The six months [away], they showed me how fast everything can be changing."
