Jessica Pegula is back in business after an early exit last week at the Stuttgart Open easily beating
Eva Lys at the
Madrid Open on Friday night 6-2, 6-2.
Pegula as expected had too much for the new top player from Germany who continues to grow but doesn't yet seemingly have the weapons to tackle the big name players.
Especially one as consistent as Pegula who very much puts in the same display time and again and aside from the odd wobble is usually rock solid, that proved to be the case again here.
Lys lost serve early in the tie but broke back for a potential bit of resolute defence early on. But she was broken back and lost serve at 3-2 which proved to be the killer blow in the set as she was broken again just before the end with a pretty comfortable service hold from there.
Pegula herself staved off three break points before finally getting over the line to set herself up in the tie. Lys lost serve early in the second as Pegula ramped up the pressure even more. She went 2-1 up and this was after Lys had chances to hold serve. She lost it more comfortably next time but Lys hit back.
Only to lose it again which proved to be her undoing as she had enough to counter Pegula but couldn't sustain it over a long enough period to trouble her. Pegula broke at 5-2 and then served it out pretty comfortably.
Next is Moyuka Uchijima who saw off Ons Jabeur earlier today who is not having the desired return to the tour that she wants. The winner faces either Ekaterina Alexandrova or Daria Kasatkina in the Last 16. But overall for Pegula, a pretty comfortable start and one she will hope to build on from here. No drama and no shocks.
