Angelique Kerber defeated
Amanda Anisimova after losing the opening set in Bad Homburg and moved on to the semifinals 2-6 6-3 6-3.
It was a sensational comeback win for Angelique Kerber on her native soil in Bad Homburg. Anisimova came out strong in the opening set attacking Kerber early in rallies especially on her 2nd serve. The American was able to win 75 % of 2nd serve points and that proved key in the 6-2 set.
The script completely flipped in the 2nd set as Kerber served overall much better. The German also played much better on return winning the majority of rallies after Anisimova hit her first serve. That American was able to pull back an early break but Kerber was too solid overall winning the 2nd set with 6-3.
Boosted by that result Kerber continued playing well in the 3rd set. She took an early double break 3-0 but Anisimova pulled one back to make it 4-2. Kerber was simply better in rallies and more solid overall which allowed her to maintain her lead.
Anisimova tried but the damage was already done and the American is travelling early to London. For Kerber, this is only the start as she will play the semifinal match later in the day due to the rain delay yesterday.
