The 2nd day of the US Open brought some interesting early matches as Konta defeated Watson in an all-British clash and Gasparyan sent Puig packing at the US Open.
A highly anticipated 1st round match of the
US Open in the British media was the one between two British players Konta and Watson. And while the 1st set didn't dissapoint the 2nd one was a bit lacklustre. The first set that lasted a whole 75 minutes brought us many twist and turns. It was Watson who was better early on and had a commanding lead but Konta did not give up and slowly and surely fought her way back into the match.
We ended up in a tiebreak where
Konta once again proved her mental fortitude. She won the super close tiebreak 9-7. It was a devastating blow to the confidence of
Watson who looked completely lost after the 1st set. She rushed in the 2nd set committing many errors. Konta boosted by her 1st set victory looked to end the match quickly and she ultimately did. The end result was 7-6(7) 6-1.
One unexpected result came in the form of a loss by Puig.
Puig hasn't played good tennis in a while but even so a loss in the 1st round of the
US Open was not expected. The Russian Gasparyan was better in 3 sets. The 1st set went largely into the Russians favour as she won it 6-3. Puig came back to win a closely contested 2nd set with 7-6(0). For a moment it looked like Puig found and answer but then she competely collapsed in the 3rd set which she lost by 6-0.
A very dissapointing result for
Puig who had high hopes entering the penultimate grand slam of the season.
