Tennis star Madison Keys won the biggest title of her career at the 2025 Australian Open, which has led many to ponder if the American could leapfrog compatriot Coco Gauff as the top ranked player on the WTA tour this season.

Keys stunned former World No.1 Iga Swiatek in the semifinals, advancing to face two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the final. In one of the best matches of the short season, the American upset the World No.1 to win her first Grand Slam trophy and return to her career-high ranking of World No.7.

Catching up to Gauff is in play this season

Currently ranked at World No.3, Gauff is the highest ranked American on the WTA circuit. Prior to the Australian Open, the Atlanta native was coming in off back-to-back titles at the China Open and the WTA Finals last year. Furthermore, she led the United States to victory at the multinational United Cup tournament.

However, Gauff fell in the quarterfinals to former World No.2 Paula Badosa. At the moment, 1800 ranking points separate the duo. Nonetheless, Keys has proven to be formidable on clay, having reached the semifinals at the French Open in 2018. The 29-year old has made the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, proving she has what it takes to compete on grass.

Barring any injury setbacks, Keys could challenge Gauff for the pole position among American WTA players over the next few months. The Illinois native will be full of self-belief and momentum following her Grand Slam title win, and she will be eager to surpass her current career-high ranking as the season progresses. With the Middle Eastern swing set to begin, plenty of points will be up for grabs before the Sunshine Double and then the clay court season.
