Last year's
Madrid Open Jessica Pegula added another win in Madrid to her tally by beating
Marie Bouzkova 6-4 7-6(2) to advance to the next round.
Pegula showed last year that the conditions in Madrid suit her style of play and she's doing it again this year. The American has been a steady performer for a while and even playing on clay doesn't change much for her. She faced a tricky opponent who can play really well and Bouzkova did play well.
She even served better than Pegula which was a bit of a surprise but in the rallies, it was Pegula who dominated. The first serve saw Pegula jump out to an early 5-2 lead which she nearly threw away by allowing Bouzkova to make it 5-4. The Czech player served to make it 5-5 but failed to win the game as Pegula escaped with the first set 6-4.
The seconds set saw Pegula jump out to an early 2-0 lead but she gave it back right away. Bouzkova later saved match points to extend the match but it ended after the second-set tiebreak which Pegula was able to win 7-2. A good win for Pegula who keeps on marching in the Spanish capital.
