Alycia
Parks (No. 82) stirred up comments from fans on social media after her victory
over
Daria Snigur (No. 134) with a score of 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. The American caught
attention not only for her win but also for her lively comeback and attitude on
the court, with some even comparing her to
Serena Williams.
In the
nearly two-hour match, Parks had 10 aces, and her reactions upon winning some
of her points drew attention. "Idk I’m stanning. She got the theatrics
like a former player I liked," wrote some fans on X (formerly Twitter).
"Exactly Alycia gives off Rena [Serena] so bad I can’t not stan her," another fan wrote.
"Alycia getting angry with herself after hitting aces just like Serena. This is why I’m a die hard Park Ranger."
Alycia Parks
sparkles in Australian Open debut
Parks
secured her second victory in a Grand Slam draw and her first at the Australian
Open, the only Grand Slam where she hadn't debuted yet. The former world No. 40
won her first title at the 2023 Lyon Open and surprised throughout the year
against opponents like Petra Martic, Caroline Garcia, and the former world No.
1 Victoria Azarenka.
Despite not
maintaining a consistent performance, there are still high hopes for the
23-year-old tennis player, as recently commented by the former doubles world
No. 1 Rennae Stubbs: “She's a potential top-10 player within the next 12
months. She's got to keep, obviously, the body healthy. She's a strong girl,
really wants it, she has a great head on her shoulders."
"I
think she’s a great talent and there’s a great upside for her. She has every
power tool in the world, and without question can be a Grand Slam champion one
day if she keeps putting the work in. She is good, really good," she
added.
In the
second round, Parks will face the 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez (No.
32), who advanced by defeating the 17-year-old Sara Bejlek (No. 133) with a
score of 7-6, 6-2.
